Once again, women’s cross country and football headline the list

Waynesburg University athletes continue to compete in their respective fall sports seasons. Here are the athletes that excelled this week to earn the Hammer Down Athletes of the Week.
Katie Latimer – Women’s Cross Country
The Waynesburg’s women’s cross country team continues to be the team to watch this fall. Fresh off a win at the W&J Invitational, in which the team swept the top five finishers, the Presidents’ Athletic Conference preseason top team competed Saturday, Oct. 8, at the DeSales Invitational. The Yellow Jackets came in fourth place out of 35 teams with a seven runner scoring total of 94 points.
Latimer was the top runner for Waynesburg this week, as she’s been for most of the year. Latimer finished in eighth place with a 22:38 mark in the 6K race. Latimer’s eighth was the first of four top 20 finishes for Waynesburg on the day.
Latimer and company take on the Oberlin College Inter-Regional Rumble on Saturday Oct. 15, before the PAC Championships on Oct. 29.
Kevin Barnes Jr. – Football
Waynesburg Football has won low-scoring defensive games the past two weeks. The Waynesburg defense proved itself again this week by only allowing nine points to Geneva in the win.
So while the defense picked up last week’s award, the offense gets this weeks. Senior wide receiver Kevin Barnes Jr. is this week’s winner. Against Geneva, Barnes caught five passes for 101 yards. One of those receptions was a 30-yard strike from Aaron Jenkins that tied the score at seven in the third quarter.
The Yellow Jackets’ next opponent is a home match with D3football.com nationally ranked and PAC leading Thomas More.
Well done to this week’s winners. Hammer Down looks forward to another great week of competition for next week’s Athletes of the Week.
