Pittsburgh Pirates Trade deadline 2019 Thoughts

S. Samek

Just about a week away is one of the most exciting times of the MLB season, trade deadline.

So lets take a look at how I think the Pittsburgh Pirates should approach the deadline.

As of 7/24/19 The sit at 46-54 and 7.5 games out of first in the central division. This is last place in the division. They also sit 7 games back of a wild card spot. There are nine teams ahead of them in the wild card standings.

Honestly I feel its a long shot to make the playoffs. I don’t think this is a good time to go all-in for a wild card game.

Yet I don’t feel like its time for a complete rebuild. There are still a lot of useful piece for future playoff runs.

There are a few pieces that could be moved though. Closer Felipe Vazquez comes to mind first of all. Late inning relief is always coveted this time of year. However with Vazquez still under a team-friendly contract I don’t see him going anywhere yet. That and it looks like they aren’t interested with parting with Vazquez.

Outfielders Cory Dickerson and Melkey Cabrera could be on the move. With an outfield that has Marte, Polanco and a rising Bryan Reynolds those two seem to be a surplus. The could give a veterian bat to a contending team.

Other than that it doesn’t look theres too much to trade.

If the Pirates were buying, starting pitchers would be the best bet. they need a consistent starter thats going to stay healthy and eat innings. It seems like a lot of problems with the lineup as a whole is getting heathly. With massive numbers of dl stints its often hard to play consistent ball.

Hence why I think the best move is to just stay as is. Get some of the guys back and healthy. Then you can get a better gage to see if your closer to needing to buy,or sell.

Theres just no real reason to blow the team up complexly, but it can be improved. It just dosnt make sense to extend all te resources for a small gain for the position they are currently in. Making those big moves now would probably hurt more the long term than help the short term.

Should be interesting to see what moves, if they make any. Stay tuned.

More Than A Game review

S. Samek

The other day I stumbled upon an interesting movie for free on YouTube. The name of it is More than a Game.

The movie is a documentary about Lebron James and his high school days at St. Vincent/St. Mary in Akron, Ohio.

Its an ok movie. Like it tells the story in a pretty straight forward manor. Its true to what happened to sense its a documentary, not really a fantasy,or biopic.

Yet I feel like its kind of forgettable. Like I watched it once and kept forgetting the name of it to find for this review. Like how can you recomend a movie without remembering the title.

It’s a decent movie if you like Lebron James and want to know how he got his start in high school prior to his dominance in the NBA. I would also recomended to basketball,or sports documentary fans as something to watch. Heck try it out if your just a sports fan you may like it.

I would probably give it a c ,or 5/10. It kept my attention for a bit,but it wasn’t like oh I need to watch this again and again. Once is probably enough.

IMBD gave it a 7.6 so my rating is a bit lower than theirs. Check out what they thought here.

Check it out and see what you think hoops fans. I’ll probably leave it on the bench though.

2019 NALCS Summer Spilt Weeks Six and Seven Recap

S. Samek

We have a makeup week to cover plus the most recent weekend of action to cover. Let’s see what happened on the rift.

For week six we had Team Liquid and 100 Thieves both going 2-0. Liquid defeated CLG and Flyquest. 100 Thieves took out Echo Fox and Optic. Liquid was challenged a little by CLG,but beat Flyquest with ease in 30 minutes.

100 scored a good win against an improving Optic gaming and crushed Echo Fox in a 30 minute game. They seem to be improving as it gets closer to playoffs. This is a team that has a shot to get into the playoffs now.

Optic and CLG had the 0-2 weekends. Optic lost to Clutch and the aforementioned 100 Thieves. Disappointing, losses there. Yet they still sat at 6-6 and closer t playoffs than out of them.

CLG lost to Liquid and Golden Guardians. Nothing terrible, but they aren’t really moving up in the standings by going 0-2. CLG is a team that could be top two ,or three without a doubt, but its weeks like this where they have to scratch there head and think they could have played better.

TSM, Cloud 9, Echo Fox, Clutch, Flyquest and Golden Guardians each picked 1-1 weeks.

Echo Fox had a big win over Cloud 9 on day one, but didnt carry over the momentum during a day two loss to 100 Thieves.

TSM downed Clutch, but then allowed Cloud 9 to comeback and steal a win in an entertaining game.

Cloud 9 seemed to be slumping a bit, but by going one and one they kept up in the standings not droping nay worse than third.

Clutch played opposite games during week six. They were trounced by TSM and then they trounced Optic. They aren’t out of playoffs yet,but have to work to make the playoffs.

Flyquest is playing better recently and probably had an expected week of results against Liquid and Golden Guardians.

Golden Guardians probably lucked out by going 1-1. They haven’t been playing well recently, but its not bad enough to fall into last place. Plus they took down CLG, who seems to be a stronger opponent. They are a team to watch to see if they have what it takes t make playoffs again.

Then we have week seven. Team Liquid is starting to run away with things. The sit at 11-3 ,top spot in the standings and winners of five in a row. They defeated Golden Guardians and Clutch to secure a 2-0 week. They are the front runners to take the top spot for sure heading into playoffs.

CLG went 2-0 this week with wins over Cloud 9 and Flyquest. They sit at 9-5 and tied for second, with Cloud 9. Yet give a small edge for CLG after this last win head to head in a game that was very one sided. A run at world’s is very much a possibility.

Optic went undefeated this week as well. They beat Echo Fox and TSM. they sit tied with TSM at 8-6 for fourth, but only trail second by a game. I think another win,or two guarantees them a playoff spot. Escpially if CLG,or Cloud 9 drop a game,or two.

Golden Guardians went winless this week losing to TSM and Team Liquid. They struggled against Liquid big time. Yet they had a lead against TSM and then Broken Blade took to the spilt push and stole TSM the win. It was one of those games you have to watch and again and question how TSM won. This is a sort of litmus test week for GGS and they failed it. They showed a little bit of life against playoff contenders, but lost a big chance to distance themselves from the pack toward a guaranteed playoff spot. At 6-8 they sit tied with two other teams for the sixth position. Its going to take work to get them into the playoffs, but if they miss out I doubt anyone would be surprised.

Echo Fox also put up a goose egg for the week at the hands of Clutch and Optic. They sit at 3-11 and have lost three in a row. They are only a game behind Flyquest for last, but sit three games out of the sixth place spot. Its a long shot to reach playoffs if the chance is even still there.

Flyquest put up an 0-2 week after losses to CLG and 100 Thieves. They lost to CLG in a boring game tht only saw 11 kills combined. Then they lost to 100 Thieves in convincing fashion. They have a 4-10 record after seven weeks, which places them in ninth. They sit two games behind the sixth place tie, but only a game out of last. It’s been a big drop-off from spring and playoffs and even a regionals run are in major danger inless they shapeup and pretty much win out.

TSM. Cloud 9, 100 Thieves and Clutch had spilt weeks at 1-1.

TSM stole one from Golden Guardians, but didn’t look too impressive against Optic. TSM hasn’t really played as good as they good be this spilt and could fall out of a worlds spot unless they get it togther. I doo see them making playoffs though.

Cloud 9 still sits in second at a 9-5 record. They beat 100 Thieves, yet lost to CLG. Now the loss to CLG isn’t life altering, but I think it says the gap between Cloud 9 and the other playoff teams is closing. Cloud 9’s best bet is to finish strong and hope TSM falters a bit to try and get to worlds from points rather than a regionals run. It just feels a worlds spot is a bit more in trouble than it is guaranteed with C9.

100 Thieves did about as expected losing to C9 and beating Flyquest. They sit at 6-8 and tied for sixth.

Samek with Clutch. After Beating Echo Fox and losing to Liquid they sit at 6-8 and in a tight race for the playoffs. Honestly I don’t think any of the three 6-8 teams is emerging as a clear front runner. 100 Thieves might have a small advantage sense they seem to be playing better as of recently.

Its a race to the playoffs to be sure. Worth watching for sure.

2019 NALCS Week Five Recap

S. Samek

Five weeks down, and the quest for the playoffs is moving forward. Lets see how the start of the second half went for each team.

Cloud 9, Team Liquid and CLG sit atop the league standings at 7-3.

Cloud 9 went 2-0 with victories over Liquid and Clutch. This was even with Kumo, the sub top laner in for Licorice. They looked very convincing in both of these wins. I would sit them number one in my power rankings after five weeks.

CLG and Liquid I would have alternate the two and three ranking. While Liquid did lose to Cloud 9, which isn’t a bad loss. Just they took way too long to put down 100 Thieves. it took them 43 minutes to collect the victory. Not really a good sighn to not be able to dominate a team like in the past.

CLG had a similar story. The beat a good TSM, team while struggling to put away Clutch. I still feel like this team is for real, but needs just a bit of luck to contend for the split title.

Optic and TSM sit at 6-4. Both went 1-1 during week five action. TSM took care of 100 Thieves and fell to CLG, for the first time in 1,176 days. This isn’t entirely a bad thing, but I don’t think TSM is as close to the top three ranking as they were in the spring. Just kind of a suprising loss.but not a deal breaker for missing playoffs.

Optic beat Golden Guardians and lost to Flyquest. The loss to Flyquest was a 44 minute match, which might say that Flyquest isn’t as bad as their place in the standing. Optic pummeled Golden Guardians, which is probably a coinflip between the two as to who wins.

Speaking of Golden Guardians , they sit at 5-5. They lost to Optic and beat Echo Fox. This week was kind of a oh, nothing happened to really hurt our standings, but we didn’t really move up kind of week.

At 4-6 we have Clutch Gaming. They went 0-2 this week as expected against C9 and CLG.

100 Thieves and Flyquest are both 3-7. 100 Thieves went 0-2, while Flyquest went 2-0. Both teams are works in progress that can look good or really bad. These two are maybe long shots to make the playoffs, but being only two games out of the last spot the season isn’t over, yet.

Echo Fox sits last at 2-8 after a winless week. This team just looks out of it, but may just keep experimenting to try and find something. They sent Rush packing for MikeYeung to change things up this week. This isn’t really an improvement. In fact first game back on stage he went 0/4. Its just a mess of a roster and they are pretty close to having their playoff chances reach zero.

Should be an exciting second half of the year. Stay tuned.
