Well the baseball season came and went with not much excitement if your a Pittsburgh Pirates fan. Even in a shortened season we saw a ton of bad baseball as they finshed at 19-41.
Well for all the futility they did earn themselves a bit of a prize in the number one pick in the 2021 draft.
This is there first number one pick sense 2011 when they drafted Gerrit Cole. So which direction should they take the pick?
Well I think you have three options here. Number one is a catcher. This is the most obvious gap in the prospects in the system as well as those currently on the roster. Now picking one at number one might be a reach, but if one is avalible they should try to get one.
The second pick for position of need is pitching. Any time you can get an impact arm at the top of the draft you should go for it. With the top expected pick to be a pitcher it may not be a bad idea to draft the expected pick.
The third position I would target is the outfield. It would help to have a better hitting out fielder to help restock the system. Though not as pressing as a catcher if theres an impact bat here it should be considered.
I just hope they don’t go after any middle infield help. They don’t need anymore shortstops or second base prospects. With the fact they also are experimenting with several of them in the outfield, just says theres way too many for only so many spots.
It will be interesting to see who they consider as we get closer to the draft in 20201. Though pretty much from the announcement their picking first these are the positions I would target.
