Road to the CFP 2023

S. Samek

With it being Championship week in college football the eyes on are on the teams with the chance to make it to the college football playoffs. Let’s see which of the top 10 ranked teams are on the right road to make it and which teams need some help.

#1 Georgia 12-0

Georgia has Alamba Left on the schedule in the SEC title game. They win and they are no doubt in at 13-0. Even if they lose, I could see them sneak in.

#2 Michigan 12-0

Michigan took down Ohio State to pretty much clinch a spot. They should be win and in and with only Iowa standing in their way it’s easy to envision the Wolverines in the CFP.

#3 Washington 12-0

They should be win and in. Though with a tough match against Oregon they could fall out of contention easily with a loss.

#4 Florida State 12-0

They are the last of the unbeaten teams on the ranking list. I suspect it’s win over Louisville and make the playoffs. One loss might make them miss out though.

#5 Oregon 11-1

A win over Washington should give them a shot. Especially if one, or two teams ahead of them lose.

#6 Ohio State 11-1

The loss to Michigan Knocking them out of the conference championship game hurt. I’m not thinking there’s a way for them to make it. I doubt a one loss team that didn’t make it to a conference championship game gets in over a team that made it and lost in a conference championship game.

#7 Texas 11-1

Texas has the long road ahead. I’m not sure how they will jump three spots. Having Oklahoma State as their next test in the conference title game isn’t really a marquee win that could be used to move up in the standings. I doubt it compares to if Oregan beats Washington, or Alabama beats Georgia. Even if that happens and Texas wins, I doubt they get in over either of them. A loss and absolutely they don’t get in.

#8 Alabama 11-1

A win most certainly puts the Tide in the conversation, maybe even close to a lock. Combine that with Florida State, Washington and Michigan winning and I feel like Alabama would be the number four team in the playoffs.

#9 Missouri 10-2

Honestly no chance they get in. Not playing for a conference championship hurts them. As does the second loss. I can’t see them being able to pass five teams in the rankings.

#10 Penn State 10-2

They lost head-to-head to both Ohio State and Michigan, which doesn’t help. No conference championship game isn’t helping either. I feel like they are pretty much in the same spot as Missouri. Good chance those two teams play each other in a bowl though.
