Padres Add Arraez

S.Samek

The San Diego Padres added Luis Arrez from the Miami Marlins in a trade.

The two-time batting champion and cash considerations are headed to San Diego while the Marlins receive pitch Woo-Suk Go, outfielders Jakob Marsee, Dillon Head and first baseman/outfielder Nathan Martorella.

With those three all being top 15 ranked prospects in the Padres system. Though Head now ranks as the Marlins fifth ranked prospect and Marsee 10th, and Martorella 11th.

Who won this trade?

Pirates Trade for Bart

S. Samek

The Pittsburgh Pirates made a trade acquiring Joey Bart from San Francisco for Austin Strickland.

Bart is a catcher and former top prospect in the Giants system. He is being added to improve depth at catcher, which took a hit with Jason Delay expected to go on the injured list.

Strickland was a draft pick last year but didn’t make any appearances. This is mostly just a depth deal nothing too major.

They also traded Jackson Wolf back to San Diego. Wolf was designated for assignment the other day. Kervin Pichardo an infield prospect was acquired in the deal. Pichardo looks to report to class-A Greensboro.

Pickett Traded to Eagles

S.Samek

The Pittsburgh Steelers are moving on from Kenny Pickett at quarterback. He is being traded to the Eagles.

It’s a little surprising they are trading him. Even bringing in Russell Wilson it seemed like Pickett at worst was going to contend for the starting role. Though now with the trade the Steelers only have one quarterback after Mason Rudolph signed with the Titans and Mitch Trubisky was released. I guess we shall see if they try and draft a new quarterback of the future this year.

Cease Traded to Padres

S. Samek

The San Diego Padres are looking to add some rotation help by acquiring Dylan Cease from the White Sox. The of the Padres top 10 prospects Drew Thorpe, Jairo Iriarte, and Samuel Zavala are part of the deal, as is Steve Wilson.

Cease looks to bolster the rotation and help the Padres contend in the NL West. Will Cease be enough to push them over the Dodgers, or Diamondbacks?

2024 NHL Trade deadline Recap

S. Samek

Well, the NHL Trade deadline is done. Let’s see what went down during it.

Looks like a pretty busy final day of trades. I would say that Boston, Florida, Carolina and Philadelphia look like buyers. While the Penguins were definitely sellers.

Which it makes sense for both Florida and Boston to make trades, just a point separates them from the top seed in the Eastern Conference.

Vancouver the top seed in the Western Conference yet seemed to not make any trades. The Colorado Avalanche seemed to have a big deadline, as they try to catch up to the Dallas Stars, who they are just two points behind in the division standings. They are tied with Winnipeg though; however, the Jets had a pretty quiet deadline.

Will the moves be enough to shake up the playoff race? I guess we will have to wait and see.

Guentzel Traded to Hurricanes

S. Samek

After weeks of will they or won’t they the Pittsburgh Penguins made a decision on trading Jake Guentzel. They traded him to the Carolina Hurricanes for Michael Bunting, forward prospects Vasily Ponomarev and Ville Koivunen, the rights to forward Cruz Lucius a conditional first-round pick in the 2024 NHL Draft, and a conditional fifth-round pick in the 2024 draft. Ty Smith is also headed to Carolina.

Surprised to see Guentzel end up in Carolina. The Rangers and Canucks seemed to be the top two teams interested in Guentzel. So, to see Guentzel ended up with the Hurricanes is a bit shocking.

Though for a rental player it looks like the Penguins got a pretty good return. Who Won this trade?

Bemstrom Traded to Pittsburgh Penguins

S. Samek

The Pittsburgh Penguins did make a Thursday night trade, though not Jake Guentzel. Alex Nylander and a conditional sixth round pick in 2026 are headed to Columbus in exchange for Emil Bemstrom.

It doesn’t seem like a big move for either team. Nylander has played mostly in the AHL this year. Bemstrom has 11 points in 32 games played this year. Maybe more just a take a flyer or change of scenery type deal.

Pistons and Knicks Making Trade 2/8/24

S. Samek

The Knicks are making a trade with the Pistons to acquire Alec Burks and
Bojan Bogdanovic in exchange for Evan Fournier, Malachi Flynn, Quentin Grimes, Ryan Arcidiacono and Two future second-round picks.

Looks like Detroit should have a nice haul to use for the rebuild. New York looks to be making a push this year as they are currently tied for third in the Eastern Conference. Though it looks like they are moving on from Flynn, who the acquired in the deal from the Raptors back in December.
